Thomasville, N.C. – Unilin Flooring’s Cloninger Road facility here was recently recertified by the North Carolina Department of Labor as a participant in the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program.

The program recognizes companies for a commitment to the safety and health of their employees.

Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry presented Unilin officials with the SHARP flag and certificate at a ceremony at its Thomasville facility on April 9. Berry also presented company officials with a 1 Million Hour Award. The facility achieved 1 million hours without a lost-time workplace accident from Aug. 22, 2012, through Dec. 31, 2013.

The SHARP Award is designed for small to mid-size businesses. Companies that qualify for the award show that they have developed and maintained good safety programs for workers. To qualify for the program, injury and illness rates for the site must be below the national average for the industry, and NCDOL safety and health consultants must complete an assessment of the workplace. There are 136 general industry sites in the program throughout North Carolina, including three in Davidson County.

“We are really proud of our employees at this facility,” said Jennifer Teague, employee health and safety manager. “They have had a huge culture shift towards working safely over the last eight years. Now we are going to challenge our other locations to achieve the SHARP award.”
