Shaw’s Anso nylon earns SCS, MBDC certifications

HomeInside FCNewsShaw's Anso nylon earns SCS, MBDC certifications

Dalton—Shaw’s premium carpet and rug fiber brand, Anso nylon, recently earned Scientific Certification System (SCS) third-party certification of 25% system equivalent post-consumer recycled content. This credential verifies one quarter of allocated output from Shaw’s Evergreen Nylon Recycling Facility is post-consumer recycled fiber material. Mill executives claim Anso products have contained post-consumer recycled content since 2007.

“This step forward further demonstrates our commitment to the cradle-to-cradle philosophy and credible third-party verification of our products’ sustainability and environmental attributes,” said Rick Ramirez, Shaw’s vice president of sustainability. “It also reinforces Shaw’s commitment toward incorporating sustainability goals in eco product design, materials recovery, energy  stewardship and overall environmental and corporate social responsibility.”

Anso nylon also received Cradle to Cradle Silver certification from McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC), the third-party product and design firm founded by architect William McDonough and chemist Michael Braungart. The firm offers four level of certification: Basic, Silver, Gold and Platinum. At the current level, Anso nylon has met all requirements at the Basic level, developed strategies for including renewable energy, and conformed to company wide water stewardship guidelines, among other criteria.

“Shaw’s Cradle to Cradle carpet and rugs are a signal of the next industrial revolution,” said McDonough. “These carpets and rugs will allow us to eliminate the concept of waste by recycling synthetic materials in continuous flows that have been deeply assessed for safety and returned to manufacturing again and again.”
