TORONTO— DuPont Sorona renewably sourced polymer is the fiber of choice for the new “What Moves You” commercial carpet collection from The Mohawk Group. The new Lees styles will be featured at the DuPont Sorona booth, no. 1135N, at Greenbuild, the ‘green’ design and construction exposition and conference sponsored by the U. S. Green Building Council from Oct. 4 to 7 here.

“With Lees, it is exciting to see the first adoption of this winning combination of performance and environmental benefits in a carpet tile, an increasingly important and fast-growing segment,” said John Lyons, global carpet segment manager for DuPont Sorona. “Sorona fiber technology enables carpet mills to offer products that provide the critical performance attributes that commercial interiors demand while also helping to reduce dependency on fossil fuels by using ingredients made with rapidly renewable resources instead of petrochemicals. This is just one example of how DuPont is collaborating with customers to help address the world’s biggest challenges.”

The new Lees offerings join the Sorona styles previously available through Durkan and Karastan Contract. All feature SmartStrand Contract fiber made with DuPont Sorona and all provide the unique combination of unsurpassed performance coupled with environmental benefits.

The successful partnership between Mohawk and DuPont began in 2005 with the launch of Sorona® in residential carpet and now the two companies are revolutionizing the commercial carpet industry with both broadloom and tile offerings in Karastan Contract, Lees and Durkan products.

“Regardless of “What Moves You,” SmartStrand Contract is the fiber of choice for today’s sustainable designs,” said David Duncan, vice president of marketing for Mohawk. “SmartStrand Contract with Sorona wins regardless of whether your design specs require performance or environmental benefits for LEED points, since it contributes to both — in exceptional ways.”

Sorona received a ‘Best of Neocon’ award for carpet fiber at this Neocon 2011 at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago.

Sorona was granted a new generic — triexta — by the FTC in 2009. It was also one of the first products to be certified as biobased by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Biopreferred Labeling program. Carpet with Sorona also qualifies for the USDA Biopreferred Purchasing Program for state and federal carpet purchases. In August 2011, Sorona received Oeko-Tex 100 for Product Class 1 certification from Oeko-Tex, the most stringent testing category and certifies Sorona as safe in use for textiles and carpet for infants and toddlers. Sorona is one of the first bio-based textile polymers to demonstrate highly desirable technical and life cycle advantages for a wide range of products from apparel to carpets.
