Empire Today buys Luna Carpet

Chicago—Empire Today, the nation’s largest shop-at-home flooring company with annual sales surpassing $500 million, has purchased Chicago based retailer Luna Carpet for an undisclosed amount.

The purchase brings Empire back to its retailing roots as Luna has five retail locations in the surrounding suburbs. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. In 2007, when Luna first opened its high-end luxury retail operations, the Chicago Sun-Times reported the company had $35 million in annual sales.

Marlo Michalek, spokeswoman for Empire, told the Chicago Tribune, both companies will continue to be managed separately and there are no anticipated changes with Luna.

Founded in the 1950s in Chicago, both Empire and Luna share a similar past. The family businesses started out selling plastic slipcovers for furniture before getting into flooring installation and sales that involved having salespeople go into customers’ homes to sell.
