Mohawk Group issues two HPDs under open standard 2.0

Calhoun, Ga.–Mohawk Group disclosed that it has issued two Health Product Declarations (HPDs) under the new HPD Open Standard Version 2.0 for its EcoFlex NXT modular carpet tiles and EcoFlex NXT Air tufted nylon carpet. The company said these are the first of several HPDs that it will issued under the new Version 2.0 standard.

The Health Product Declaration format was developed by the Health Product Declaration Collaborative, which is composed of product manufacturers and building experts. An HPD is a standard format for reporting product ingredients and associated health information. It seeks to objectively provide the critical information needed to support accurate supply chain disclosure and informed decisions by building designers, specifiers, owners, and users. Mohawk is actively involved in the HPD Collaborative.

“We are excited to be the very first in the flooring industry to issue and publicly disclose two new HPDs under the HPD Open Standard Version 2.0, demonstrating our support of the HPD Collaborative and our mutual vision of transparency in building products,” said Rochelle Routman, vice president of sustainability, Mohawk Flooring. “These new HPDs will take the place of the HPDs that Mohawk issued under the original HPD 1.0 open standard. With the implementation of LEED v4, it is more important than ever before to provide our customers with complete, transparent ingredients information of our products, and the potential health impacts of the ingredients themselves.”

Mohawk Group has an extensive transparency portfolio, including HPDs, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Declare Labels. According to the company, these initiatives are essential in assisting architects, designers and end users in making wiser choices about healthy materials. The U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has also incorporated HPDs and EPDs into LEED V4, its most recent version of the popular LEED standard.

EcoFlex NXT modular carpet tiles have a composite construction of a tufted yarn dyed nylon face, primary backing, fiberglass scrim (scrim is a fabric often used to reinforce other materials, including fiberglass), and a pre-coated polymer with an extruded polyolefin modular backing that does not contain PVC. It also contains an average of 53% pre-consumer recycled content, according to Mohawk.

Mohawk describes EcoFlex NFT Air as the next evolution in red list free cushion backed carpet tile offering substantial sound reduction and enhanced comfort under foot. It also incorporates an average of 54% recycled content (pre- and post-consumer) by total product weight. It has a composite construction of tufted nylon face, primary backing, fiberglass scrim and pre-coat polymer with cushion back.
