DALTON—The Shaw Learning Academy, the training division of Shaw Industries, has received the Chester Klevins Outstanding Workplace Literacy Program Award from the Commission on Adult Basic Education (COABE). The award recognizes Shaw’s commitment to improving the lives and performance of its associates through improved workplace literacy. To this end, nearly 1,500 Shaw associates have obtained their GED and almost 1,000 have participated in Shaw’s English as a Second Language program. The Chester Klevins Award honors a single organization for an outstanding workplace literacy program that meets the needs of business.

“This award is a testament to the hard work and commitment of the associates of Shaw to further their education and skills,” said Danny Crutchfield, director of corporate training and organizational development for Shaw.

“Our associates put in the time and effort to learn these skills—skills which not only help our associates on their jobs, but which allow Shaw’s associates to better care for themselves and their families.

“Our associates are supported by Shaw’s continuing education manager, Becky Herron, along with many others within the company who support these programs by facilitating classes and motivating associates to achieve their goals,” he explained. “Furthermore, this award is recognition of the strong partnerships Shaw has developed with the state of Georgia’s Office of Adult Literacy, Dalton State College, and Georgia Northwestern Technical College, all of which are instrumental in the success of these programs.”

Crutchfield concluded, “Shaw couldn’t be more proud of its associates and the Shaw Learning Academy. This is the third straight month the Shaw Learning Academy has received national recognition of its world-class programs.”
