SALEM, N.J.—Mannington Mills has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy as a leading company in the program Save Energy Now. The program signifies a commitment to reduce industrial energy use by 25% in 10 years. Sponsored by the Industrial Technologies Program (ITP), it presents energy efficiency as a sustainable, profitable business model with opportunities to expand to new markets.

Mannington is the third flooring manufacturer to gain this distinction (FCNews, March 22/29). “[Mannington’s] commitment provides an inspiring example of how the country can tackle some of its most challenging energy and environmental issues while continuing to boost our economic competitiveness,” said Steven Chu, U.S. secretary of energy.

Dave Kitts, the mill’s vice president, environment, acknowledged that while manufacturing contributes more to the U.S. economy than any other sector, it also uses nearly 1/3 of all energy consumed in the country. “We are expanding our standing efforts to reduce energy used compared to product manufactured, to include this partnership with the Department of Energy,” he said.
