KENNESAW, GA.—Invista announced the winners of its Antron Carpet Fiber Designed to Perform Awards. Established in 1983, the awards recognize North American design firms that demonstrate creativity and innovation in commercial designs that feature Antron carpet. According to Invista, entries are evaluated on the ability to withstand the test of time, innovative use of carpet and how well the design met clients’ wishes relative to performance, aesthetics and sustainability.

“The projects honored this year are all examples of the current desire to create high-performance interiors that are beautiful as well as long-lasting,” said Diane O’Sullivan, global marketing director for Invista commercial flooring. “One of the first places designers are turning for performance and inspiration is to carpets made with Antron fiber because they know it can perform beautifully for years to come.”

Following are the category winners, all featuring various Antron fibers:

  • Education: Collaborative Design Group for the Education Sciences Building at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. The firm used Mohawk’s Lees in the Design Connect style, and Tandus’ Intersection for their visual compliance and recognized performance.
  • Healthcare: Stantec for PSE&G Children’s Specialized RehabilitationHospital in New Brunswick, N.J. Atlas Carpet Mill’s Spyro was chosen for its addition to the new, colorful, family-friendly environment.
  • Healthcare: WHR Architects for the Methodist Hospital Breast Imaging Center at Upper Kirby, Houston. Lees in Arrival and Departure styles were used in the facility to create a comfortable environment by decreasing noise and glare.
  • Large Office: 20 Below Studios for American Medical Systems in Minnetonka, Minn. The project features Lees in styles Heartland, Rifts, Granite, Buncrana and Wayfinder II, and InterfaceFlor’s Equator, Nikko Ni and Kamala Ni.
  • Public Spaces: Perkins+ Will for the shell space on the Mayo Clinic campus of Jacksonville, Fla. Designers chose Tandus’ It’s Magic, and several shades of Cambridge Select’s Park Avenue.
  • Retail: Shook Kelley for Morrison Smith Fine and Custom Jewelers in Charlotte, N.C. Atlas Carpet Mills’ Bubbles and Dots were selected for durability and performance over time.
  • Small office: Butler Rogers Baskett for the Major League Baseball headquarters in New York. Shirt by Lees fulfilled the high performance and aesthetic needs of the space.

Merit awards were also distributed for the following designs with Antron fibers:

  • Higher education: Robert Maschke Architect for Cuyahoga Community College’s student enrollment, financial aid, counseling, tutor support and career service offices in Highland Hills, Ohio. Creating a uniform, but separated space was achieved using Atlas Carpet Mills’ Composite and Structures styles.
  • Education: Fanning Howey for elementary and middle schools in Ironton, Ohio. Mannington Commercial’s Intuition, various hues of Color Canvas, and a custom-made abstract tiger stripe were installed.
  • Large office: Francis Cauffman for McNeil Consumer Healthcare Headquarters in Fort Washington, Pa. Lees’ Texture Blocks, Atlas Carpet Mills’ Shadow Boxes and Tracing, and Bentley Prince Street’s Crepe Suzette created a comfortable environment for the space’s customers and brand.
  • Large office: Envision Design for U.S. Green Building Council headquarters in Washington, D.C. Lees’ Ground Strata, the Field and the Groove are all made of 90% pre-consumer recycled content.
  • Small office: OWP/P/ Cannon Design for Veolia Environment North American headquarters in Chicago. Shaw Contract’s Yarn serves as an abstract of the four elements— earth, wind, water and fire—the design’s primary inspiration.

Antron also awarded its Sustainable Flooring Performance Award to Westminster High School in Adams County School District 50 in Westminster, Colo. The school’s original carpet from Tandus has withstood 35 years of wear and tear, since the original installation in 1975.

“The carpet at Westminster High School shows just how long properly specified and maintained carpet can last, providing years of use and savings for institutions such as schools,” O’Sullivan said. “In fact, carpets made with Antron fiber can benefit the environment since they can last up to 75% longer than other commercial carpets, which can reduce the need for replacement product and additional product manufacturing.”
