LEBANON, PA.—The Pennsylvania Recycling Markets Center (RMC) has announced the launch of an exclusive partnership with GreenCircle Certified, a company that has developed a system to certify products with recycled content. The announcement was made at the Lebanon headquarters of Regupol America, the first manufacturing company in the state to earn the GreenCircle Certified mark. Regupol is one of the largest manufacturers of sports and fitness flooring, tracks and turf underlayment using post-consumer recycled tire rubber.

The voluntary certification of recycled content is expected to help Pennsylvania companies and products that use recycled materials to stand out and become more competitive in the marketplace. “Pennsylvanians will soon begin seeing more of the ‘GreenCircle Certified’ mark,” said Robert Bylone, executive director and president of RMC. “This mark will confirm and verify claims of recycled content in a wide variety of goods, from building materials to furnishings to general consumer goods.

“Recycled content has become an added value many consumers look for,” he explained. “The certification mark will help them reliably identify products made with recycled materials and the companies that make them.” RMC will work with GreenCircle and provide assistance to its clients, but GreenCircle will maintain the certification process as an independent program.

As a non-profit organization, noted Bylone, RMC focuses on developing and expanding recycling markets in Pennsylvania, and acts as a clearing-house of environmental, economic development and manufacturing resources for end use support of recycled commodities and products.

Since its founding in May of 2010, GreenCircle has experienced exponential growth. The GreenCircle mark can be found on over 400 products across a number of industries internationally.

The partnership between GreenCircle and RMC has already demonstrated its strength with the certification of over 27 of Regupol products. “We want to certify the most sustainable products on the planet,” said Tad Radzinski, certification officer of GreenCircle. “We were pleased to work with Regupol because these products fit that mold.”

“We use anywhere from 10% to 90% recycled materials, depending on the particular product,” said Regupol president George Soukas. “This kind of voluntary certification program is a welcome step. It documents our long-standing recycling efforts, strengthens our brand among our existing customers and gives us a competitive point of differentiation to appeal to prospective customers.”

Regupol’s products have received certification for recycled content as well as for rapidly renewable resource content. “They knew we were green,” Soukas said of his customers. “We knew we were green…we now have proof.”

All parties involved expect manufacturers that make products with recycled content will be eager to benefit from third-party certification because it is inherently objective, Radzinski said. It can be “a valuable asset in establishing credibility and developing consumer confidence.”

With the increase of greenwashing claims, consumers are growing more and more skeptical, he concluded. “Third-party certification provides both companies and consumers with brand integrity and protection from misleading and untrue marketing claims. GreenCircle’s evaluation process creates trusted transparency that ensures customers product claims are valid.”
