What Taylor Swift can teach us about business

HomeColumnWhat Taylor Swift can teach us about business

Taylor Swift’s impact spans beyond music; it’s a testament to strategic branding and connecting authentically with an audience. Her tour earnings and global demand speak volumes about her approach, one that businesses can emulate for success. In fact, Harvard is offering a course on the “Taylor Swift Effect” and how to build your business.

Swift’s ability to forge genuine connections with fans highlights the power of personal branding. In an era where social media reigns supreme, her authenticity shines through. Businesses can leverage similar techniques to build a devoted following. Work tirelessly remembering your customers, stay close and interact as much as possible. When one of her fans died from the heat on her Eras Tour, she took to social media and expressed her sorrow. It’s been said she never forgets her fans.

How can you express gratitude and appreciation for your “fans?” You can write down details of people you meet, send them notes or call them. Bring customers into your social media, build videos with them and continue to build them up.

The lessons from Swift’s journey are invaluable. She has demonstrated that persistence is the key to success. Swift’s early rejections didn’t deter her; she honed her skills, connected deeply with her audience and eventually achieved her objective. When she was 11, she had her parents and brother drive her around to the Nashville record labels to listen to her karaoke songs; they turned her down. Instead of giving up, she got a 12-string guitar, practiced every day, wrote songs, and went back. This time RCA hired her. This serves as a reminder that persistence pays off in business.

Another lesson: Don’t be afraid to fail or be different. At 17 Swift applied for Kenny Chesney’s tour, worked hard writing new songs but since she was still a minor, she couldn’t travel with a tour being endorsed by a beer company. Chesney never forgot her fortitude and sent her a check for her birthday that changed her life.

Swift teaches us that evolving and expanding your brand is essential. Her continual reinvention and collaborations have expanded her reach. Similarly, businesses must adapt, innovate and collaborate to stay relevant.

Collaborations and endorsements also play a pivotal role. Swift’s partnerships, whether with musicians or brands, have widened her influence. Similarly, businesses can benefit from aligning with diverse partners for mutual growth and exposure.

Lastly, tapping into authenticity is a meaningful change. Swift’s success stems from embracing her true self. Similarly, businesses should leverage their unique traits, hobbies or expertise to resonate with their audience. Will your cat ride with you on your motorcycle?

By emulating Swift’s dedication, authenticity, adaptability and willingness to explore new horizons, businesses can craft a robust brand presence and foster lasting connections with their audience.
