WFCA asks members to support Marketplace Fairness Act

HomeNewsWFCA asks members to support Marketplace Fairness Act

With the help of World Floor Covering Association (WFCA) members, the U.S. Senate agreed to vote on the Marketplace Fairness Act on May 6, 2013. The Act authorizes states to collect sales tax on Internet sales, but a number of senators changed their supporting votes. A small group of senators is now relentlessly attacking the Act, costing 12 supporting votes already. Therefore, it is important that WFCA members continue to express support. It is only through congressional action that brick-and-mortar stores can compete fairly with out-of-state Internet and mail-order companies. We cannot afford to lose any votes.

We need all WFCA members to call their senators and ask to speak to the legislative aide who works on tax issues. If you have previously contacted your senators’ offices, it is still important to contact them before next Monday’s vote. Maintaining support is paramount, along with convincing those senators who voted against the Act. The best way to achieve this is for all WFCA members to let their senators know they support the Marketplace Fairness Act and urge each senator’s favorable vote.

When you call, you should explain that you are a business man/woman in their state who hires employees, and that the Marketplace Fairness Act is needed to allow you to fairly compete and maintain your business. If the legislative aide is unavailable, please leave a voice message stating your support.

WFCA also suggests that, in addition to calling their offices, you send an e-mail to both of your senators urging a positive vote. In order for this vital legislation to pass, WFCA members need to show how important it is to their businesses.

If you have any questions or need more information, please contact our legislative counsel, either Paul Kanitra or Nile Elam, at 202-587-2736 or our legal counsel Jeffrey King at 301-302-3204.
