DALTON—For the third consecutive year, Mohawk Industries has been included on Newsweek magazine’s annual ranking of the 500 greenest U.S. companies, making it the only soft and hard flooring manufacturer to be included in 2011. In this year’s list, Mohawk moved up in position to 292nd place in overall sustainability, up from its No. 350 ranking in 2010. Mohawk ranks ninth among all consumer goods manufacturers.

“Mohawk is honored to be ranked among the leading manufacturers and service providers in Newsweek’s annual green rankings,” said Bill Kilbride, chief sustainability officer. “This recognition is a testament to the commitment and hard work of all of our employees as we strive toward sustainability.”

Newsweek’s Green Rankings list evaluates publicly traded companies on their environmental footprint, the methods through which they manage that footprint and their sustainability communications. To determine this year’s rankings, Newsweek partnered with environmental research organizations Trucost and Sustainalytics, which calculated the Environmental Impact Score and Environmental Management Score, respectively. Each accounted for 45% of the overall ranking, with the Disclosure Score representing the remaining 10%.

Company executives said its sustainability strategy focuses on its products, processes and people. In July, Mohawk released its second annual sustainability report and the detailed reporting earned Mohawk high marks for Disclosure, which is a new calculation in the Newsweek Green Rankings scoring system. In Newsweek’s Disclosure category, Mohawk ranks in 122nd place.

“I’m particularly proud that we earned such a high ranking in disclosure since we have taken great pains in our reporting to provide our stakeholders with credible, verified information,” said Kilbride. “To be recognized for this by the Newsweek team is proof that doing the right thing is valued and appreciated.”
