Commack, Ny. — CBC Flooring is now offering an AIA- and USGBC-certified continuing education unit (CEU) course on the benefits of polyolefin and PVC/Halogen-free flooring for architects, designers and specifiers.

The hour-long course has been presented to over 600 professionals in the A&D community this year alone in markets across the U.S., and is the first of several planned courses CBC Flooring will present.

“We are delighted to be offering this course to help those who specify flooring products learn more about this ever-changing technology. Solid and relevant data presented in the course allow them to make an informed decision,” said Chip Braulick, senior marketing manager for CBC Flooring.

“While many are seeking green flooring products, it is difficult to tell what products are truly green. This course gives them a lens through which to consider their polyolefin choices.”

The course covers the raw materials, composition and properties of polyolefin; the benefits of halogen- and PVC-free flooring; and the associated environmental benefits, including Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) credits.

“Back in the 1990’s, polyolefin had a somewhat negative connotation due to quality problems when used in carpet tiles,” said Braulick. “Now the technology has improved and this course really gets into the technical aspects of what it is, why it’s a good choice environmentally and how it performs in hard surface floor coverings.

Danika R.S. Dallam, Vice President of Design for SAAarchitects in York, Penn., arranged to have the course presented at lunchtime this summer for seven members of her staff.

“We found it extremely beneficial,” said Dallam. “Technology and products are changing so rapidly, we can’t keep up. With CBC’s course, our whole office could learn about it all at once.”

Several of CBC’s product lines including Indelval rubber flooring and CERES, which includes WELS Sheet and Sequoia products, contain polyolefin and are free of halogen and PVCs. This means there is no harmful off-gassing during use and no harmful compounds are emitted into the atmosphere when the products are disposed of at the end of their lifecycles.

“The fact that CBC offers this CEU course solidifies that we made the right decision when we specified their products, because they are doing the responsible thing,” said Dallam. “Their product lines not only create visually interesting designs, but also keep the environment at the forefront.”
