Effective tips to preventing burnout

HomeColumnEffective tips to preventing burnout

burnoutEarlier this month I got a call from a past coaching client and business owner, telling me he’s had enough of the flooring business. After many years in the industry, he said he’s simply not motivated.

My client started installing at a young age and eventually went into his own business. His store is on the smaller side, but it’s upscale. Moreover, he has great customer reviews and loyal employees. Now he’s wondering what to do next? How can he possibly get himself back in the swing of things and keep motivated?

My client’s predicament reminds me of an old song by Peggy Lee, “Is That All There Is?” Let’s face it—these last two years have been both hectic and unpredictable. We all know how to get more business in slow times, but we’re not used to drastic changes in energy prices, rising interest rates and supply problems, although the latter seems to be abating somewhat. And let’s not forget about the fallout from the pandemic! We haven’t had to deal with all these things all at once. It’s a recipe for burnout.

Following are some tips to follow to stay positive, motivated and, more importantly, healthy:

  1. Take care of yourself. If you’re not exercising, it’s time to start. You may need to push yourself to get going but exercising will raise your endorphins, which will help your energy level. Don’t think about it, just get on a schedule.
  2. Connect with new people. I suggest joining a group comprising other owners and managers—perhaps a group focused on leadership? We are all attracted to people who make things happen, so do it.
  3. Give yourself some quiet time during the day. Find a quiet place to think or meditate. During this “quiet time,” do not answer the phone or open the door. This is a good time for meditation or listening to a podcast that will help your mind or business.
  4. Get adequate sleep/rest. Not sleeping enough can jeopardize your health and cause depression. Also, sleep will help your mind quiet down and recharge. If you like afternoon naps, take one.
  5. Make a list of the things you like to do. We’re all multi-tasking these days, but make sure you set aside some time to do the things you enjoy. For example, if you like being outside then make sure to step out for some fresh air and sunlight. We forget that when we take away all the things that give us joy, we start to feel resentful and angry.
  6. Hire a life or business coach. A coach can give you new ideas about how to better manage your life and business. He/she might help you prioritize what’s important and how to make necessary changes in your life. This doesn’t have to be forever but sign up for at least six months and hold yourself to it. I have found that most people know what to do, but when it actually comes to doing it, they get in their own way. We often resent getting out of our comfort zone, but this is where change starts.

As we approach the start of a new year, think about fundamental ways to improve your life/health/business. Remember, these don’t have to be sweeping changes—start small with something more incremental but also meaningful. Change usually starts with taking one small step.
