HomeNewsLocal children learn cultural lesson at Dover Rug & Home

Mahmud Jafri, CEO of Dover Rug & Home, hosted third grade students from the Charles River elementary school on Monday, January 28th for an interactive, educational program on the art of rug making. This educational outreach program, now in it’s 20th year, promotes a better understanding of the Muslim culture and the “story” told by each hand woven rug. Jafri taught students how handwoven rugs are designed, how the wool and materials used are gathered, and the techniques used in the process. Then they learned how wool is dyed from colors made from natural products, along with the difference between cool colors and jewel tones, the weaving techniques, and the steps involved to complete a rug. As part of the program, children utilize their creativity to design their own carpet squares.
