Slower summer months leave time to clean up your act

Our friends at Mullican Flooring posted a great story about spring cleaning that we wanted to build on for your benefit, with a few extra tips on keeping your place of business clean.

Does your office look like this?

Studies have shown productivity increases in neat, organized environments so be sure your backroom/office space is orderly and clean for those who choose to work there. Get together with a co-worker or rope your out-of-school-for-the-summer offspring into the task for a day at work with the ‘rents. You’ll be happy to have the help.

Break down sections of each room into achievable tasks. If every surface is cluttered with papers, set a goal of one piece of furniture per 30 minutes (or 60 if it has been a few since you’ve tackled this task). Your desk, side table, chairs that have turned into side tables and shelves should be relatively easy to organize, especially if you use the method Mullican outlines. The mill’s blogger recommend putting items in categorized piles, so for an office pile A could be keepers, pile B could be tossers, and pile C could be items that you’re not sure about.

Set aside a little extra time for your file cabinet. If you haven’t been organizing your files all along, this could be a task all in itself. If so, give that item a full day to clean out so that you can achieve your goal easily.

Eventually you’ll have an office that looks like this, and you and your staff will be happy and productive.
