Spartanburg, S.C.On Saturday, Sept. 22, the South Atlantic region of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) presented its inaugural Roger Milliken, Honorary AIA Legacy Award posthumously to former Milliken CEO, Roger Milliken. AIA plans to honor impactful leaders within its client community with this award every three years at the AIA South Atlantic Region (SAR) conference. This association award is presented to those who use architectural services and believe good design matters.

“The award recognizes those who have held the architecture and design community to a higher standard,” said Jim Rains, FAIA, a regional director of the South Atlantic region of AIA. “Honored recipients are individuals who have displayed passion and dedication to improving our world through the use of design and who believe, as Mr. Milliken did, in the power of innovation, inspiration and creativity.”

Jim Rains, a regional director of the South Atlantic region of AIA, and Heidi Burmeister, senior territory manager for Milliken, at the 2012 South Atlantic Region (SAR) conference.

“Mr. Milliken believed in the power of great architectural design and ‘doing good’ within each of the communities we serve,” said David Moody, president of Milliken’s global floor covering division. “We hope that through this award, he will continue to inspire the future of architectural practice through purpose, vision and passion for design.”

Milliken’s global floor covering division was a sponsor at this year’s SAR conference. The keynote speaker was David Miller, FAIA, a nationally-recognized architect known for achieving innovative, sustainable and high performance design concepts, while responding to each site’s unique conditions.

“[Miller’s] work is a true example of purposeful architecture,” noted Moody. “His commitment to worldwide sustainable design is something from which we can all learn.”
