DALTON—For the second straight year, Shaw sponsored the Special Olympics Georgia 2012 State Fall Games. The event, which took place earlier this month, drew more than 1,300 athletes; seven competitions were hosted as part of the three-day Special Olympics celebration. Shaw’s sponsorship commitment consisted of the event’s Opening Ceremony at the Dalton Trade Center and awards presentation support for all sporting competitions.
“The Special Olympics Georgia State Fall Games are an important and exciting event for our community and we’re honored to be a sponsor,” said Shaw president Randy Merritt. “For three days, our community brings out the Olympic spirit and we watch the athletes truly enjoy themselves. We’re proud to help the Dalton community make these events possible.”
This year’s Fall Games was comprised of a variety of sports competitions, including softball, bocce, cycling, long distance walking and running, golf and golf skills. Shaw associates volunteered during competitions at select venues throughout Dalton.
“Supporting the Special Olympics means more people with intellectual disabilities can participate in sports training and competition,” said Georgia Milton- Sheats, Special Olympics Georgia CEO. “When our athletes succeed, attitudes change, communities develop, and health and self-esteem are built. Shaw helps participants of the Special Olympics achieve success.”
